I consider myself a physician, educator, scholar, mentor, and creator of new programs. As an early founding faculty at COM, I chaired the Physician Search Committee and recruited and mentored many medical faculty.  I teach, develop curriculum and either direct or codirect 2 medical student courses.  As Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education, I am building residency programs sponsored by UCF that involve multiple regional hospitals.

My professional society involvement has been pivotal in advancing my scholarly work and national reputation. I was a founding member of the Cytopathology Resource Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), serving as Chair from 1998-2001.  I served on many American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) committees and was elected President (2001-2). Much of my scholarly activity relates to laboratory quality and benchmarking practices, as well as promotion of uniform terminology and management guidelines. FDA and NIH advisory board appointments followed, as well as consensus conference and editorial board appointments.  More recently I have focused my activities on educational assessment and board certification. I am President of the American Board of Pathology for 2012 (national certification board), and I serve on the Pathology Residency Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). I have been fortunate to receive multiple awards:  both a Lifetime Achievement Award and an Outstanding Communicator Award from the CAP, the Papanicolaou Award (ASC), the Univ. of Iowa Dept. of Pathology Distinguished Achievement Award, and two American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology Awards of Merit.
